Getting Started with your Trezor® — Official Quick Start
Welcome! This step‑by‑step guide helps you unbox, set up, and secure your Trezor hardware wallet so you can safely manage cryptocurrencies. Follow each section carefully — security and recovery depend on how you complete setup.
What’s in the box
Your Trezor package contains everything you need to begin. Typical contents:
Trezor hardware device (Model T / Model One depending on your purchase)
USB cable for connection to desktop or phone (USB-A/USB-C depending on model)
Recovery seed cards (paper cards) for writing your seed phrase
User manual and warranty information
Sticker and tamper-evident packaging
Important: Only use the USB cable included or a high-quality cable you trust. If the tamper-evident seal looks broken on arrival, contact support and do not use the device.
Before you start — minimum requirements
A computer or smartphone with a supported browser (Chrome, Edge, Firefox, or the official Trezor Suite app).
Internet connection to download the Trezor Suite or access trezor.io/start.
Private, well-lit space to write down your recovery seed away from cameras and prying eyes.
Step-by-step setup
Open trezor.io/start or download Trezor Suite.
Go to trezor.io/start or download the official Trezor Suite app. Always confirm you’re on the official domain before proceeding.
Connect your device.
Plug the Trezor into your computer or phone using the supplied USB cable. The device screen will light up and display a welcome message. If your device prompts for firmware update, follow the on-screen instructions in the app — firmware updates are signed and necessary for security.
Create a new wallet.
In Trezor Suite or the web interface, choose Create a new device/wallet. The device will generate a recovery seed — a list of words you must write down in the exact order shown.
Never store your recovery seed electronically (photo, cloud storage, notes app). Always write it by hand on the provided recovery cards and store them securely offline.
Write down your recovery seed.
The device will display 12, 18, or 24 words (depending on model and options). Write each word on the recovery card in the order shown. Confirm the words when prompted. This seed is the single most important backup for your funds.
Set a PIN code.
Choose a PIN on the device — this protects the device if it’s lost or stolen. The PIN is entered on the device screen; some models randomize the keypad layout to prevent shoulder-surfing.
Optional: Set up passphrase (hidden wallet).
Advanced users can enable a passphrase to create an additional hidden wallet. Only enable this if you understand how passphrases work and can safely back them up. Losing a passphrase can result in permanent loss of funds.
Finish and verify.
After setup, verify that the device name and firmware version match what Trezor Suite shows. Send a small test transaction to verify everything works before moving large amounts.
Security best practices
Always buy Trezor from official channels (trezor.io or authorized resellers). Avoid marketplaces where devices could be tampered with.
Never share your recovery seed or PIN with anyone. Trezor support will never ask for your seed or PIN.
Store recovery seed copies in separate, secure locations (safe deposit box, home safe).
Use a passphrase only if you understand it; treat the passphrase like an additional seed word and store it offline.
Keep firmware up to date — updates contain important security fixes. Verify updates are delivered through Trezor Suite.
Making your first transaction
To receive crypto, open the account for the desired coin in Trezor Suite and click Receive. Always verify the receiving address on the Trezor device screen — the on‑screen address is the authoritative value. For sending, create a transaction in the Suite, confirm amount and fee, then verify and approve on the device screen.
We recommend sending a small test amount first. Once confirmed on-chain, send the remainder.
Common issues & troubleshooting
Device not recognized: Try a different USB port or cable. Reboot your computer and retry. Avoid USB hubs for initial setup.
Firmware update failed: Make sure you’re running the latest Trezor Suite and your internet connection is stable. If problems persist, visit official support.
Forgotten PIN: If you forget your PIN, you must perform a factory reset and restore from your recovery seed. Ensure your seed is safe before doing this.
Seed compromised or lost: If you suspect compromise, immediately move funds to a new wallet with a new device and seed.
FAQ
Can Trezor be hacked?
No device is 100% immune, but a Trezor hardware wallet isolates private keys from your computer and is designed to resist remote compromise. Keep firmware updated and protect your seed.
Can I use Trezor with my phone?
Yes — many Trezor models support mobile connections via compatible cables or Bluetooth accessories when applicable. Check Trezor Suite for mobile compatibility and instructions.
What happens if I lose my device?
Funds are not stored on the device; they are derived from your recovery seed. If you lose the device but have your seed, you can restore your wallet on a new Trezor or compatible wallet software.
